Wales is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and the island of Great Britain. It is bordered by England to the east, the Irish Sea to the north and west, and the Bristol Channel to the south. It had a population in 2011 of 3,063,456 and has a total area of 20,779 km2.
THE WELSH LANGUAGE
Welsh is a member of the Brittonic branch of the Celtic languages. It is spoken natively in Wales, by some in England, and in Y Wladfa (the Welsh colony in Chubut Province, Argentina). 19% (562,000) of residents of Wales aged three and over reported being able to speak Welsh. The Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 gave the Welsh language official status in Wales.
